Test Pilot Heroes

Dick Burroughs and Bill Millar

My Heroes

His EdgeHis Edge

Dick Burroughs and Bill Millar, the families to whom I have dedicated His Edge, were my heroes. Dick was eight years older than I and Bill four years. I not only admired their engineering and pilot skills, but their human touch. Dick’s job was so mammoth, it was unreal; his responsibilities were enormous as chief test pilot. And Bill had come to Chance Vought from the Pacific fleet as a night fighter pilot. Both men put their lives on the line each time they flew an unproven plane.

I sometimes pictured myself among two Giants. Everything I did, or thought of doing, I measured by their wisdom and empathy for others. They were men of eminence. I saluted them in all of my actions. I awoke every morning with a smile. I would be with one, maybe both, of my tutors. And when one of them asked my advice, I puffed up. My day was made.

But when they weren’t there, the anguish gnawed and gnawed. It still does after sixty years. Maybe that’s part of life, though. I know Dick and Bill were Believers. We talked about it. I guess with our vocation, we couldn’t be otherwise.

I’ve always felt part of their families. That itself is comforting, and is why I dedicated His Edge to the Burroughs and Millars.

Random House Dictionary defines “hero” as “a person of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his/her brave deeds and noble qualities.” Dick Burroughs and Bill Millar masterfully exemplified all of these qualities during their lives; I am so thankful for their powerful presence in my life.
